Abstract In recent years, live streaming of video games has become a booming field of communication. This research focuses on the relationship between game streamers who provide continuous on-site broadcasts of video games and live streaming guilds. It also combines the theoretical framework of “playbour” with theories of emotional labor and affective labor to explain the work-driven nature of game streamers in live streaming guilds on the Chinese Mainland. The paper deploys the research methods of participatory observation and in-depth interviews and obtains research materials based on streamer communities and relevant streamers on a large live streaming platform. The findings reveal six core aspects of the labor of game streamers in live streaming guilds: imitation, guild dependence, survival, guild intervention, confrontation, and desire. As intermediary organizations, live streaming guilds implement labor constraints by controlling the salaries and remuneration of streamers and the means of production, thus affecting the entire digital labor process of streamers. In the emotional labor category, as the degree of guild control increases, streamers become unstable playbour. In the affective labor category, streamers regard themselves as game players, affirm their individual desires, and exert the autonomy brought by them. The research indicates an obvious phenomenon of intermediary power in the organizational control behavior of live streaming guilds over game streamers, while game streamers make certain adjustments and carry out various forms of resistance to the control of live streaming guilds through affective labor. As the gaming medium demonstrates increasingly potent social impact, this research interrogates the labor dynamics within. Predicated on the unique affordances of games and the hybrid status of streamers as laborers and playbours, we delineate three distinct labor control mechanisms utilized by streaming guilds. This analysis serves to illuminate the intricate nature of intermediary organizational control within the realm of digital labor.
