Abstract Existing studies of visibility exhibit a natural visual bias. Given the complex structure of the global digital media ecosystem and the rich diversity of human senses it cultivates, the present study seeks to move beyond the conventional focus on visual practices in visibility studies by theorizing sound as a novel medium of being “visible.” By integrating theories of soundscape and social visibility and employing qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews and participatory observations, this article takes the “unmute” figuration in online games as a micro-device, discovers how it enables players to curate their visibility and pursue personal goals, interprets the meaning of visibility ingrained in the practice of unmuting in gaming, and explores the theoretical potential of an “acoustic visibility” that is becoming empirically commonplace in the digital media ecosystem. The study finds that online game players use voice chat as a means of aestheticization and relationship management, which manifests a dynamic practice of strategic visibility in their intentional power performance and allows them to maintain a balance among different social forces. However, even while achieving that balance, online game players are also subjected to senses of unease and a loss of control. Based on the theorization described above, this article proposes a three-dimensional analytical framework for understanding acoustic visibility that centers on the interactions between self, relationships, and power. It further develops the concept of “regimes of acoustic visibility” as a way to transcend the binary oppositions of recognition versus control and visible versus invisible in traditional visibility studies and calls for constant returns to specific technological and practical contexts to achieve an “ecological” understanding of the power of visibility.
