本文聚焦於曾經在新冠肺炎疫情後期遍佈於中國公共空間的核酸亭之社會生命，尤其是其身後事。隨著疫情走向終結，這一新冠物質遺產經歷了移置、廢棄或改造。鑒於其喚起記憶、激發表達的潛能，本文將核酸亭概念化為意外的記憶景觀。從「核酸亭去哪兒了？」這個簡單的問題出發，通過實地調研，分析各類圍繞核酸亭的文本，本文致力於追蹤核酸亭的足跡，探討它們如何與城市空間脫鈎，又如何呼應「日常生活的脈動」，進而承載疫情經驗和記憶。本文發現：核酸亭有可能變成廢棄物或荒蕪憶景，也可能被轉化為商品化憶景。無論其去向如何，它們都或多或少構築出閾限空間，並牽涉到不同的閾限實踐，意外成為記憶言說、書寫和想像的中介之物，在表徵和非表徵層面擦除或淨化過往，或者召回無法忘卻的疫情記憶。相較於被異地棄置的廢棄物和被改造得面目全非的再商品化之物，成為荒蕪憶景的核酸亭在外形和與地方的關聯上更具本真性，也因而具有更大的追憶潛力。 |
| Abstract |
This article explores the social life of the COVID-19 testing booths that became ubiquitous in public spaces across China during the pandemic, with a particular focus on their afterlife. As the pandemic waned, these booths—arguably the only tangible legacy of COVID-19—were relocated, abandoned, or repurposed. Recognizing their capacity to evoke memories of the pandemic, this article conceptualizes these booths as unintended memoryscapes. Inspired by the straightforward question of where the COVID-19 testing booths went, the article uses field research and textual analysis to meticulously trace their trajectories.
The investigation reveals how these booths have been removed from public spaces while still resonating with everyday life, encapsulating the experiences and memories of the pandemic. The findings indicate that COVID-19 testing booths may evolve into “waste,” “deserted memoryscapes” or be transformed into “commodified memoryscapes.” Regardless of their ultimate fate, they create liminal spaces and engage in various liminal practices, unexpectedly serving as mediators of memory narration, inscription, and imagination that either erase or purify the past at both representational and non-representational levels or evoke enduring pandemic memories. Unlike testing booths discarded elsewhere or repurposed beyond recognition, those that have become deserted memoryscapes retain greater authenticity, thus enhancing their capacity to evoke memories.
