Abstract |
Female multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) players interact with the game and other players through the mediation of digital avatars rather than directly. Through the walkthrough and participatory observation of Honor of Kings, as well as in-depth interviews with players, this study explores digital avatars, an underexamined topic in gaming and gender studies, analyzing their role in shaping female players’ gender experiences and subject construction. As an entrance, the avatar connects the player to a specific game environment. Female players enjoy various ways of combat through different heroes’ “bodies” and gradually cultivate gaming awareness and confidence. As a mask, it was used by the player as an interface with limited clues to practice gender performativity. However, due to the data correlation between “personal avatar” and “combat avatar,” they are caught in a dilemma. As a mediation, the avatar connects the game environment at the software level with the gender order at the social level. The latter is refracted through the technological lens as a closed loop of the “contempt chain,” guiding the player’s utilitarian gender practices, thus reproducing the female player’s marginal status and the dilemma of subject construction from the beginning. Digital games that are expected to be “subversive” offer practical potential beyond fixed gender identities, yet they are still encoded in their deep logic with the dominant gender script. Gender studies of game avatars complement discussions of how individuals and dominant gender cultures meet and interact in the mediation of technology.
